West Warriors u13 v Northern Knights U13
match report - West won by 27 runs
Played at Horsham Trinity Cricket Club
The West won the toss for the first time and decided to bat first on a green
topped pitch. They were soon in deep trouble at 6 – 4, with the loss of the top
four batsmen. Ben Meyerratken took three wickets, two caught at backward point
by Will Wright and another at midwicket by Pugh. A run out was the fourth
wicket, which brought Rory Collier and Callum Edwards to the crease. The pair
scored quickly for the Warriors, taking the score to 45 before Collier was out
caught behind by Glenn off the bowling of Joe Cambridge for 25.
That wicket brought captain Mike Harris to the crease on the stroke of drinks.
Both Edwards and Harris batted sensibly, with Harris hitting three successive
fours and Edwards a flat six over long on. The two batters put on 86 before
Harris was run out for 27. Edwards meanwhile began to open up, and reached his
fifty. He was ably assisted by Toby Macer who was bowled for 22 by James Lasis.
Edwards followed soon after, caught by Morgan off Wright for 90. It had been a
quite brilliant innings. The West finished on 192, which was impressive after
their poor start.
Meyerratken was the pick of the bowlers with 3 – 22 from 6 overs.
South started quickly, with seven runs coming from the second over from Macer.
However, the left armer claimed the first wicket, Coombs caught behind by Hood
for 1. After some well placed boundaries by the number three Royes, Macer got
his second wicket, Morgan LBW for 2. After some good economical bowling from
Futcher, Edwards, Sargeant and Collier, Alfie Laurence got the third wicket,
Cambridge bowled for 20. Soon after, Laurence struck again, dismissing Royes for
an entertaining 44. The wicketkeeper Will Glenn looked good before he was caught
by Edwards off the bowling of Mike Askew. Askew, the regular wicketkeeper,
bowled “darts” for four overs at an economy rate even Raymond van Barneveld
couldn’t match.
Meanwhile, at the other end, Curtis Howell, also an untried spin bowler, took
two wickets, both bowled. However, a rapid 20 from number 9 Will Wright gave
South a chance, but with Futcher taking his first wicket and Macer his third,
West wrapped up the game by 27 runs.
It was a great day, and thank you to everyone involved.
Mike Harris, West U13 captain.
